The State Formerly Known as "Ohio"...DAY 6

On day 6, it all started "coming to an end".  Thinking about heading back to Minnesota the next day, we started our morning with a sit on the lanai...

Jezebel "lap landing" for an early morning rubdown

...and a walk around the neighborhood to "explore" (we'd been so busy going out to see stuff on the island, that we knew NOTHING about our immediate surroundings).

We walked by the kayak club's storage building, spent a little time on a tiny "beach" near the harbor, and took photos of the Kauai Inn sign.

When we got back to the hotel, our toilet continued to be a problem (which started the day before...something about the screen from the shower drain moving to the pipe for the toilet and not allowing anything to pass through when flushing)(I know...WAAAAY too much information, but...we got a better room, so it's all good...), then headed out to find a box in which to mail some stuff home.

We'd purchased lots of souvenirs (at Long's, Wal-Mart, Super K, etc.), and, since we travel "carry on only" couldn't take liquids back with us.  So...my pineapple papaya jelly and guava jam had to go on to Minnesota without us.  Many bags of macadamia nuts and a bunch of Kona coffee also made it into the box as well.)

As we were getting the box at a nearby ABC Drugstore, I blew a flip flop (making it a "flop flop"?!), so had to buy new ones.  I'm SURE the new pair is thinking WHAT THE HECK?!, as they've had to transition from sand to snow, but they say "Hawaii" on the sole, which makes me smile, so they're just going to have to deal with it...).

We headed back to the hotel, packed up the box, and headed out for the day.  We started by stopping at the post office.  That "pay the same postage for the box, no matter what's in it, or how much it weighs" thing is a pretty good deal...roughly $16.00 to send it all back to the midwest...EXCELLENT!!!

After the post office, we headed to "The Feral Pig" for one last breakfast.  I had the TIKI LOCO (pulled pork, eggs, rice, and brown gravy)...

...which was ESPECIALLY TASTY with the Valentina Salsa Picante...

(Happy side note...I found this hot sauce at one of our local grocery stores upon my return...!!!!!!)!!

After breakfast, we headed to Kalapaki beach behind Duke's (attached to the Kauai Marriott).  Again...we spent so much time exploring other parts of the island, that we missed this LOVELY area, until now...

After the beach, we went to Kalapaki Shave Ice for one last FABULOUS treat...

a particularly brave "chicken-let" who joined us at our picnic table...

...then headed to "The Right Slice" for one (or two!) final slices of pie (I had the chocolate coconut macaroon AND island lime again...).

After The Right Slice (sooooo sad to say goodbye!), we headed to Wailua Falls, just outside Lihue, to see what it looked like.  If you're as old as I am, you will remember it from the opening credits of "Fantasy Island".  Check out the opening sequence here.

Because of all the rain we'd had during the week, it didn't look anything LIKE the falls in the promo.  Here's a capture from the show...

Here's what it looked like while we were there...

There was a local couple there selling fresh coconut, and items made out of palm fronds...very cool!  If I could have made it back to the mainland with that hat, I'd SOOOO be wearing it...every day...to school...!!!!

After the falls, we headed up the eastern coast (a short trip) to Kapa'a Village and did some shopping.  We started with a couple of grocery stores (of course!), and found all SORTS of tasty things (although we'd JUST shipped our box that morning, so couldn't really buy much).

I bought some dried papaya, dried coconut chunks, and we found a FABULOUS photo op...

Funny...Hawaii is one of the largest consumers of Spam...which is made right here in Minnesota.  I don't think we have THIS MUCH variety anywhere in OUR state!!!

While exploring Kapa'a, we drove past an old hotel (the Coco Palms....read about it here) which was damaged by the hurricane in 1992.  It was still standing.  It was still abandoned.  It looked really creepy.

We tried to get photos of it as we drove by (and almost got sideswiped by a mini-van).   It was overgrown, and blocked off, and the highway beside it was really busy (did I mention we almost got sideswiped by a mini-van?).

Here are some photos from the present (from the internet...saving us from further traffic entanglements...and thus allowing me be able to post this)...

...and here are some shots from it's heyday!!!!

After Kapa'a, we went back to Poi'pu beach for one last walk in the sand (and where we saw whales breaching out of the water WAAAAAY out on the horizon)...

...had a lovely dinner at Brennecke's (I had the Creamed Pesto, Gorgonzola, and Rigatoni with Grilled Chicken Breast...AMAZING...!!!)...

...took a few final "post sunset" photos on the beach...

...a few photos of Brennecke's after dark...

...then headed back to the hotel, started gathering stuff up/packing, and went to bed.

The end was almost upon us...
